The Tall Ship's Fundraising Voyage

My Story

Glenlee is the only steel rivetted square-rigged cargo ship left in the UK. She is one of just five Clydebuilt such vessels left in the world. I think she is important to Glasgow, to the story of shipbuilding on the Clyde and to the whole Scottish maritime tradition. Please help me and the rest of the Glenlee Team support her during this troubled Covid Pandemic.

Coronavirus has had a huge impact on all heritage organisations, including the Tall Ship Glenlee.  With the summer season almost wiped out, it is for Glenlee and many attractions like three winters in  a row.

It is too easy to say 'poor me' and ask for help, but this Fundraiser is about the Tallship Team showing how much we care for this unique piece of maritime heritage that we are involved with.  If we show what we are prepared to do to help her, then we hope that our friends, family and the public will support Glenlee.

In the first part we hope to raise some money to fix a few of the items that are broken:  some tools in the workshop, and to fix the forklift truck.  (Probably about £8000)  After that it is all about the work that we need to do to get Glenlee to drydock and this will cost over £100,000 in preparation and then we have to fund the actual drydocking.

So this is my page on this Fundraising adventure and I hope to cover about 300 km in September and see how much money I can raise.  The distance we are doing between us represents Glenlee's journey back from Seville back to the Clyde for restoration.  Over the month I hope that you will share the times of the Riding Crew as they sailed on Galatea (as she was then) on her way back to becoming the Glenlee.  (Please see the overall Event page for more detail.)

That's my bit and below is the other information about this Fundraiser.

Coronavirus has had a huge impact on all heritage organisations, including the Tall Ship Glenlee.

Following government guidance, the ship had to close during what would have likely been the busiest period of the year. Inevitably, this has resulted in a significant decrease in the funds we need to maintain and restore the ship.

At the Tall Ship, we have decided to confront these difficult times with our very own fundraising voyage! The premise is that we, the Tall Ship team, are attempting to cover the distance of the Glenlee/Galatea's final voyage at sea - when she was towed from Seville to Greenock under the stewardship of Captain Alistair Miller, Murray Scrimgeour and Charles "Charlie" McIntyre.

Glenlee, or Galatea as she was known as at the time, departed from Seville at 0800 on 1st June 1993 on a 1380 nautical mile voyage to Greenock, arriving at 1650 on 9th June 1993.

The Tall Ship's staff, volunteers and trustees are attempting to cover the equivalent distance on land by means of walking, running, cycling or any other Strava tracked activity. That is, 2555.76 kilometres (rounded up to 2556 km) or for those that prefer the imperial system - 1588.076 miles.

The challenge will begin on Tuesday 1st September 2020 and our aim is to have collectively covered the entire distance before Thursday 1st October 2020.

We will use blog posts to update you on how the team is progressing and give you further insight into the original voyage (with reference to Captain Alistair Miller's original notes!). Links to these posts can be found in the 'updates' section below.

We appreciate all support and any donations are greatly appreciated!
